Looking for details on e-cigarette liquid ingredients? You’re in the right spot! The Vaping Post offers comprehensive guides that answer key questions about vaping, focusing on the primary components of e-juices
The basic ingredients usually found in an e-liquid are as follows (in descending order by quantity):
Propylene glycol
Vegetable glycerin
Flavours and flavour enhancers
Water
Alcohol
Propylene glycol
Propylene glycol (PG), a key ingredient in e-liquids, is also commonly found in many consumer products. It’s widely used as a moisturizer in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and food (E1520), meaning we inhale, ingest, and apply it on our skin routinely. Read this article to learn everything about propylene glycol
Did you know?
In e-cigarette liquids, propylene glycol enhances flavors and boosts throat hit. It’s thinner than vegetable glycerin and has a mild sweet taste
Current scientific evidence shows that it poses no significant health risks regarding toxicity when ingested or used, such as in night clubs or theaters
Although propylene glycol is considered safe for inhalation, there is limited scientific data on its long-term effects
Vegetable glycerin
Vegetable glycerin (VG), also known as glycerol, is safe for the body when absorbed through digestion or skin. Used in foods (E422), cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals, this e-liquid ingredient is derived from vegetable oils
Did you know?
Vegetable glycerin boosts vapor output
However, it can also diminish flavor intensity
It generally constitutes around 50% of the ingredients in e-liquids, but is gradually increasing (certain e-liquids can even contain 100% vegetable glycerin, also known as Full VG)
Inhaling vegetable glycerin seems to pose no significant health risks
Nicotine, often mistakenly linked to tobacco-related harm, is key to addiction in smoking but is not a major health risk at the levels used in smoking or vaping. It’s far less harmful compared to the toxic compounds from burning tobacco. Check out our scientifically-backed explanations prepared with experts for more details
E-liquid production is governed by strict manufacturing standards, requiring substantial industrial equipment and expertise, despite the simplicity of the final product. How do I choose my e-liquid?

To sample an e-liquid before purchasing, visit your local store and ask a sales assistant for a trial. Alternatively, if you prefer to test an e-liquid at home, using a dripper is recommended
How do I make my e-liquid last longer?

Why is my e-liquid changing colour?
The color of an e-liquid can change for various reasons. Higher nicotine levels, like 18mg, tend to darken the liquid compared to ones with 3mg. Exposure to temperature, UV rays, and oxidation can also affect the color, making it duller. However, these color changes do not impact the e-liquid’s properties, and it remains safe for vaping
Why does my e-liquid make me cough?
Coughing when switching from cigarettes to e-cigarettes is normal and similar to your first time smoking. If propylene glycol in e-liquids causes sensitivity, opt for one with less PG. Also, coughing can occur if the vaping power is too high; lowering the wattage might help. Additionally, too much nicotine could be the culprit, so consider using an e-liquid with lower nicotine content to alleviate coughing
