Why does my vape taste burnt & how to fix it? 2024

Nobody enjoys a burnt vape. After putting effort into finding the perfect e-liquid, it’s frustrating when the taste is off. If you’re experiencing a burnt taste while vaping, it’s important to understand why it’s happening and how to fix it. In this blog, we’ll cover the main reasons for a burnt taste and how to resolve them.

If your vape tastes burnt after using the same coil for a while, it might be time to replace it. Regularly changing your coil is key to maintaining the best flavor and vapor production. Swapping coils is simple and affordable, especially when compared to the cost of tobacco cigarettes. Typically, a coil lasts 1-2 weeks, but if you vape less frequently, it could last up to a month

Fix

Replace your vape coil. If you’re unsure how, you can refer to our “How to Change a Vape Coil” guide, check your device’s manual, or visit one of our stores. Our staff will be happy to assist you.

Your tank needs topping up

If your vape tank or pod is low on e-liquid, you’ll get a burnt taste when you inhale. Instead of vaporizing the e-liquid, the coil burns the wicking material, resulting in a harsh, unpleasant taste that no one enjoys.

Fix

Always keep your tank filled with e-liquid to avoid running low or empty, which helps extend your coil’s lifespan. In tanks with large glass sections, it’s easy to see when you’re low, but with pod kits, it might be less obvious. Regularly check your pod and top it up as needed

You haven’t primed your coil

When installing a new vape coil, it’s crucial to prime it first. This means filling the device with e-liquid and letting it sit so the cotton wicking fully absorbs the liquid. If you use the device before the cotton is saturated, you risk burning it, resulting in a harsh burnt taste.

Fix

Always prime new vape coils before using your e-cigarette. If you’re unsure how, check out our “How to Prime a Vape Coil to Prevent Burnout” guide

Your power settings are too high

Most vapes have adjustable power settings to customize your experience. Lower power gives a cooler, milder vape, while higher power creates a warmer, more intense experience. However, setting the power too high can overwhelm the coil and cause a burnt taste. Once the wick is burnt, the bad taste will remain until you replace the coil

Fix

Start with a lower power or wattage setting and gradually increase it until you find the best level. If the vape tastes burnt or too hot, lower the power. Always check the manufacturer’s recommended wattage for your device or coil, which is often printed on the coil itself. Generally, if the coil resistance is above 1.0ohm, use 10w-16w; if below 1.0ohm, 18w-50w is ideal. However, always refer to the manufacturer’s guidelines for the best results

You’re using the wrong type of e-liquid

Choosing the right e-liquid for your vape kit is crucial. Using e-liquid that’s too thick or too thin can cause a burnt taste, damage the coil, or lead to leaks. The key factor to consider is the VG content, which affects the liquid’s thickness. E-liquids generally fall into two main categories based on their VG content.

VG E-Liquids

VG e-liquids, sold mainly in short-fill bottles (50ml or 100ml) with 0mg nicotine, require you to add a nicotine shot to reach your desired strength (usually 3mg or 6mg). These e-liquids have a high VG content (60%-70% or more) and are thick, producing large vapor clouds. Most pen and pod kits aren’t compatible with high-VG e-liquids. Kits that can handle VG e-liquids typically have specific features designed for this purpose

For VG e-liquids, compatible vape kits usually have:

  • Sub-ohm Coils: Coil resistance below 1.0ohm (typically 0.2ohm to 0.6ohm)
  • Large Wicking Holes: Bigger coils with large wicking holes to handle thicker liquid
  • High Power/Wattage: Kits often support up to 50w or more, with some going up to 220w. However, check if your coil can handle the power
  • Airy Draw: A loose draw for direct-to-lung (DTL) inhaling, rather than a tight draw like a cigarette

PG E-Liquids, 50/50 E-Liquids and Nicotine Salts (Nic Salt or NS)

PG (propylene glycol), 50/50 blends, and Nic Salts are sold in 10ml bottles with nicotine strengths from 0mg to 20mg. They have a VG content of up to 50%, making them thinner and suitable for devices with small wicking holes, such as pen kits, pod kits, and coils above 1.0ohm (e.g., Aspire’s BVC and Nautilus coils).

However, using these liquids in high-VG devices can be harsh and may lead to:

  • Leaking: Thinner liquids can flood the coil, causing leaks
  • Burnt Taste: The coil might vaporize the liquid too quickly, resulting in a burnt taste

Your disposable vape tastes burnt

A burnt taste in your disposable vape often means it’s low on e-liquid. Usually, the battery depletes before the e-liquid, but sometimes the opposite occurs. Disposable vapes typically list a puff count based on short puffs, so taking longer, deeper puffs may reduce the total number of puffs you get.

Fix

If your disposable vape tastes burnt, try these tips to extend its life:

  • Wait Longer Between Puffs: Allows the wick to re-saturate with e-liquid
  • Shake the Vape: Helps distribute the e-liquid in the wick
  • Take Smaller Puffs: Reduces strain on the coil

If these steps don’t help, your vape has likely run out of e-liquid, and you’ll need a new one. Consider switching to affordable pod kits for long-term savings

For large puff disposables like the Instafill 3500 or Elf Bar AF5000:

  • Check the Liquid Reservoir: Ensure there’s still e-liquid in it
  • Allow Time Between Vaping: Let the juice refill the tank section
