Top 10 Tips: How To Prolong The Life Of Your Vape Coils

Vape coil lifespan varies based on factors like coil type, vaping habits, e-liquid type, puff duration, coil resistance, power settings, and maintenance. Typically, coils last from a few days to four weeks. Manufacturers often recommend replacing coils weekly, but infrequent vapers may extend this duration.

Coils don’t stop working suddenly; flavor will decline and taste burnt, making vaping less enjoyable. Regular replacement ensures optimal performance and flavor. For new vapers, we provide tips to prolong coil life and enhance your vaping experience.

Top 10 Tips: How To Prolong The Life Of Your Vape Coils

Vaping frequency

Frequent vaping wears out coils faster due to increased strain. Heavy vapers might need to replace coils every few days, while moderate vapers may see coils last up to two weeks. Casual or social vapers may only need to replace coils every four weeks.

Wattage and power settings

Using higher wattages generates more heat and causes coils to deteriorate faster. To extend coil life, use settings within the coil’s recommended wattage range. Lower wattages reduce strain on coils, while higher wattages typically result in more frequent replacements. Most coils indicate their optimal wattage range for best performance.

For example – Aspire AF Mesh Coils are available in two resistances:

  • 0.6Ω Mesh Coil – Best vaped between 15W-18W
  • 1.0Ω Mesh Coil – Best vaped between 12W-15W

Priming

When installing a new vape coil, it’s essential to prime it by allowing the e-liquid to fully saturate the wicking material. To prime, drip a few drops of e-liquid onto the exposed cotton wicking material inside the coil. Alternatively, fill your vape pod or tank and wait a few minutes for the juice to soak in. Avoid pressing the power button until the coil is saturated to prevent burning the cotton. Let the new coil sit for up to 10 minutes with e-liquid, then start with a lower power setting. Once primed, you’re ready to vape.

Dry Burn

Keep your tank or pod filled with e-liquid and avoid letting it run dry. Many devices have an e-liquid window for easy monitoring. If your liquid is low, add more e-liquid. If you experience a dry hit, stop vaping for a few minutes and refill your tank or pod, allowing time for the wick to absorb the e-liquid.

Correct inhaling technique

Inhaling from a vape is different from smoking a cigarette. Instead of quick puffs, take slow, steady draws for 3-5 seconds. To get more vapor, press the fire button longer and inhale longer. With inhale-activated vapes, a slow draw gives a better puff. Proper inhaling technique might take some practice.

Avoid chain vaping (quick successive puffs), as it prevents e-liquid from saturating the wick, leading to burnt coils and unpleasant taste. Wait longer between draws to let the coil cool and the wick re-saturate, ensuring a better vaping experience and longer coil life

Sweetened e-liquids

E-liquids with high sweetener and coloring levels can caramelize and clog coils faster, leaving residue that hinders proper wicking and reduces coil lifespan, causing a burnt taste. Opt for clear or less sweetened e-liquids, such as tobacco, menthol, or fruit flavors, for longer coil life.

Maintenance and care

Regular maintenance extends coil lifespan. Clean your tank, prime coils correctly, and keep e-liquid levels topped up. Proper coil care ensures a better vaping experience and saves money.

Turn down the power

For devices with variable wattage, reduce the power output to lessen coil strain and extend their lifespan. Many modern vape kits have a ‘smart mode’ that reads coil resistance and automatically adjusts wattage to the optimal level for best performance.

PG/VG e-liquids

If your coils are burning quickly, check your e-liquid type. High VG e-liquids are thicker and may wear out coils faster, suitable for high-powered sub-ohm and DTL vaping. For low to mid-powered devices, use 50/50, high PG, or nic salts. These thinner juices are less likely to clog and work well with low-powered MTL devices like pods and pens. You might need to increase nicotine strength for satisfaction, but you’ll use less juice, and your coils will last longer.

Coil quality

Buy vape coils from reputable manufacturers that match your device. Not all coils are the same. Consider trying mesh coils, which heat evenly across a larger area than regular coils, leading to better longevity due to improved wick-to-wire contact and heat distribution.

How do I know when my vape coil needs changing?

  • Vape tastes burnt/metal taste
  • Vapour production is reduced
  • Leaking/Gurgling
  • E-liquid turned dark brown
  • Burnt smell
