Build quality and design
The Maxus Max measures 43 x 30.9 x 128.5 mm, making it larger than most AIOs but still pocket-friendly, resembling a dual-18650 mod and tank setup like the classic SMOK Alien kit. I received the black version, which features unique color frames, gunmetal firing bar, and buttons. The firing bar on the left and buttons below the screen make it user-friendly, offering a symmetrical design suitable for both hands. It’s durable, with no paint issues so far, and looks fantastic overall
The Maxus Max features a 1.3-inch color screen with four UI options (blue, yellow, red, green) and minimal branding, keeping the design sleek. The latch-style battery door fits securely without gaps, and the buttons are solid, with no rattle and a satisfying click.
The pod tank, held by magnets, is easy to insert and remove. It has a smooth, adjustable airflow ring with a stopper for precise control. The tinted pod is easy to see through, though a clear option would be even better for monitoring juice levels. Overall, it’s a well-built, stylish device.
Getting started
Maxus Max is pretty simple to use compared to a mod kit, but a little more complex with more features than many AIOs out there. Here’s a rundown of basic operations:
Click fire five times to turn it on or off.
Use the up and down buttons to adjust wattage.
Holding down and fire will cycle to the next UI color.
Holding up and down locks the adjustment buttons (the device can still be fired but you can change that in the menu.
Click fire three times to enter the menu.
The screen shows wattage, live voltage, battery levels, and resistance. Modes include Power, Temp Control (SS, Ni, Ti, TCR), Bypass, and VPC (watt curve for fine-tuning). While TC support is limited due to coil compatibility, SS316 and TCR are sufficient. Bypass mode feels unnecessary, but VPC is a standout feature.
The settings menu allows puff cut-off adjustments (5-15 seconds), and the info menu displays live battery voltage per cell. The pod uses a plug-n-play coil system, though coils can be tough to remove without a tool. Refilling is easy via a bottom rubber plug, exposing a large fill hole—simple and efficient.
Performance
The Maxus DTL Pod uses the new MX line of coils. And there are quite a few of them available. The two included are:
MX1 single-mesh 0.15-ohm coil rated at 50-80 watts (best at 70)
MX2 dual-mesh 0.2-ohm coil rated 60-90 watts (best at 80)
Freemax offers additional coils separately, including MX3 (triple-mesh), MX4 (quad-mesh), and MX5 (penta-mesh), supporting 60–110W for high-wattage DL vaping. The MX1 SS316L coil is TC-compatible and works well in temp control mode.
MX1 coil performed best at 70W with great flavor, lasting 100mL of juice, while the MX2 worked similarly at 80W. The MX1 SS316 coil in TC mode required a higher temperature setting (80W, 550F), but dry hit protection was effective. All coils deliver excellent performance, as expected from Freemax.
The device charges via a bottom-mounted Type-C port with a 2A rate (tested at 2.16A) and supports passthrough vaping.
Pros and Cons
Pros
Cons
Solid build quality
Decently sized for a dual-18650 device
Nice large and bright color screen
Good capacity (5 mL)
Pods are easy to fill
Firing bar is great
Tank is lightly tinted
VPC mode (watt curve) is nice to have
TC mode with compatible coil is great option
Two coil options included
Coils can be hard to remove by hand
No real need for Ni and Ti TC modes
Not sure who the audience is for this
CONCLUSION
The Freemax Maxus Max 168W is a fantastic device with excellent coils, solid build quality, and great features. The tank performs well, and the design is visually appealing. However, its proprietary pod system limits versatility, and its size and power may not suit beginners or typical pod users. If you’re looking for a high-performance AIO kit, this won’t disappoint.
