The JUUL is a slim, rechargeable pod vape made for smokers switching to vaping. It uses disposable, pre-filled pods with 3% or 5% nicotine salt and comes in tobacco and menthol flavors—though in New York, only tobacco is available due to the flavor ban. Each pod holds 0.7 mL of e-liquid and comes in packs of two or four. Launched in 2015, JUUL was groundbreaking at the time, and although many competitors have emerged since, it’s still a solid option—especially now that it’s more affordable.

Size, weight, and feel
The JUUL looks like a USB stick and has inspired many similar vapes. It’s made of aluminum with plastic pods, feels sturdy, and is button-free—just inhale to activate. The 200 mAh battery is small but efficient, using temperature control for smooth puffs. It charges via a mini USB dock and comes in grey or silver. Though the internal components have evolved, its size and shape haven’t changed much. It’s compact, lightweight (just over 14g with a pod), and easy to use hands-free.
Getting started
The JUUL battery and pods are sold separately in slim, recyclable boxes. The battery comes with a USB charging dock, but starter kits with both are no longer available. JUUL pods cost $15.99 for a 4-pack or $9.99 for a 2-pack, with each pod priced around $4-5. You can save 15% with auto-shipping if eligible. The pods fit securely into the device, snapping in without a loud click.
How to begin
The JUUL was designed for the average smoker. So, you don’t have to be an expert to use it. It comes with a very simple user manual, but here are the main steps to using a JUUL.
Remove the cardboard display pod from the battery.
Make sure the battery is fully charged.
Snap in a fresh pre-filled pod into the device.
Put your lips on the mouthpiece and inhale.
Battery life and charging
The JUUL battery lasts about half a day for heavy vapers and up to a full day for lighter use. It charges quickly in under an hour, with my JUUL taking around 45 minutes. You can’t vape while it’s charging, but I was able to use it right out of the box without charging. For convenience, it’s smart to keep a spare charged battery if you’re using it as your main vape, especially if you don’t have easy access to a charger.
Pros and Cons
Pros
Cons
Consistent performance
Very easy to use
Cigarette-style MTL draw
Slim and lightweight
Durable construction
Available in most convenience stores
Pods snap securely into place
Limited 200 mAh battery life
Less than 1 mL pod capacity
Pre-filled pods are pricey
Airy and low temp hits
Hits weaker than the original
CONCLUSION
The JUUL doesn’t feel the same as it used to. With fewer flavor options, the hits now feel underwhelming. It seems like they either reduced the wattage or made the temperature control more sensitive, resulting in cooler, less satisfying puffs. If you’ve used a JUUL before 2019, you’ll likely notice the difference.
